New Usual

Alarm shrieks
Heating whirs
Shower hisses

Freezer hums
Clock ticks
Radio babbles

Tap runs
Kettle boils
Teaspoon tinkles

No purr
No mew
No greeting

Silence howls
Silence roars
Silence echoes

Coffee sipped
Throat tight
Vision blurs.

  1. I’m so sorry for your loss. Everyone is different and everyone deals with grief in different ways. For me, my only way through is to go to an animal shelter and to adopt a new cat or dog in honor of the one that passed away. The new one cannot replace the lost one, but the difference is distracting in a helpful way and I am kept busy taking care of the newbie.
